Ophthalmological screening tests for school children from the Lublin Voivodeship are underway.

At the beginning of the new school year, research is being carried out on the basis of agreements with educational institutions that have joined the Lubelska Unia Cyfrowa project. In schools, in addition to examinations, educational activities will also be conducted.

The examinations will cover 5,000 students attending forms 1–8 of primary schools in the Lublin Voivodeship (children aged 7–15). So far, as part of the screening program, over 420 children from two schools (in Świdnik and Motycz) have been examined. Sixty-five schools from across the Lublin Voivodeship have already applied to participate in the screening examinations.

Participation in the screenings makes it possible to detect visual impairments at an early stage, which should then be subjected to more detailed ophthalmological examinations. If a visual defect or other vision disorders are detected, parents will receive written information about the need for further diagnostics at the General and Pediatric Ophthalmology Clinic of University Hospital No. 1 in Lublin.

Children participating in the examinations will receive small gifts in the form of school supplies. The anonymized data collected during the screening phase will help assess the progression of myopia in the Lublin Voivodeship and enable necessary treatment for a larger number of children.

During the examinations conducted on 29 September at a school in Świdnik, the students and the research team were accompanied by POLSAT Television.
