Report from the conference "Lublin Digital Union – The use of digital solutions and artificial intelligence in medicine – a research project"

On February 23, 2024, at the Lublin Conference Center located at 2 Artura Grottgera Street in Lublin, the opening conference of the project “Lublin Digital Union – The Use of Digital Solutions and Artificial Intelligence in Medicine – a Research Project” was held.

The project aims to develop a theoretical model for conducting scientific research using modern technologies, digital solutions, and artificial intelligence in medicine, using ophthalmology as an example. The project leverages the potential of three Lublin universities operating within the Lublin Digital Union: the Medical University of Lublin, the Lublin University of Technology, and the University of Life Sciences in Lublin.

The ceremonial opening of the event took place jointly with the International Conference “Advances in Ophthalmology – Education and Practice.”

The guests were welcomed by the Vice-Rector for Internationalization, Digitalization, and Promotion of the Medical University of Lublin, Prof. Robert Rejdak, MD, PhD, DSc, h.c. The inaugural lecture on artificial intelligence in medicine was delivered by Prof. Marek Niezgódka, PhD, DSc, Chair of the Council for Digitalization at the Medical University of Lublin. During the conference, a letter from the Minister of Science, Dariusz Wieczorek, was read.

In the presentation session, lectures were delivered by representatives of Lublin higher education institutions: Prof. Dariusz Czerwiński, PhD, DSc, Eng., Vice-Rector for General Affairs and Development of the Lublin University of Technology; Prof. Kamil Jonak, PhD, DSc, Eng., and Prof. Paweł Krukow, PhD, DSc, from the Medical University of Lublin; Prof. Bartosz Sołowiej, PhD, DSc, Vice-Rector for Science and International Cooperation, and Dr. Ewelina Cholewińska from the University of Life Sciences in Lublin; as well as Prof. Goran Petrovski from the University of Oslo.

During the first panel discussion, featuring professors from the Department and Clinic of General and Pediatric Ophthalmology of the Medical University of Lublin (Prof. Katarzyna Nowomiejska, PhD, DSc; Prof. Anna Matysik-Woźniak, PhD, DSc; Prof. Joanna Dolar-Szczasny, PhD, DSc; and Prof. Tomasz Chorągiewicz, PhD, DSc), along with guests from Ukraine (Prof. Natalia Malachkova, Dr. Olga Denisiuk, and Dr. Kateryna Hutsaliuk), topics related to the use of telemedicine in terms of patient benefits were discussed, as well as issues concerning medicine in the era of digital transformation.

During the second panel discussion, Prof. Marek Niezgódka, PhD, DSc, together with Prof. Dariusz Czerwiński, PhD, DSc, Eng., Prof. Bartosz Sołowiej, PhD, DSc, and Prof. Kamil Jonak, PhD, DSc, Eng., discussed the development of the Lublin Digital Union as a concept of strategic partnership among Lublin universities.

Participants in the panel discussions emphasized that interinstitutional cooperation at the level of experts from various fields and entities is a prerequisite for future joint initiatives and activities in the areas of medical sciences, digitalization, and telemedicine.
